TV on the internet – Australian channels

If you are an Australian, you probably already knew everything about live Australian TV channels and video services. In case you not, following list of Australian video sites can be very useful source of information in order to find the best ways to watch live TV on your computers.

First on our list of Australian internet TV services and our first recommendation is ABC TV.

Few years ago, ABC TV has started the next phase of revolutionary new television broadcasting in Australia with the launch of its free web TV service, ABC iView. This is a live streaming video service which provides full-screen, HD resolution video and sound at a quality level above that found on most world wide television content sites, or sites like YouTube. To achieve this quality, ABC iView has been designed to run on computers with a high speed broadband connection, such as ADSL2.

ABC iView has its own in-built video player, which means users don’t need to download any additional player or software to get live video streaming. Users can watch the five channels, or create their own, by selecting individual programs and adding them to a playlist.

For Australian people that was a new way to watch TV on the internet. No longer tied to the television set, Australians now have access to a quality, high-resolution, full-screen viewing experience on their PC or laptop. With a single click, viewers can choose what to watch, when to watch, and where to watch ABC content from five channels including:

ABC CatchUp – showcasing the weekly programs that everyone’s talking about from ABC1 and ABC2.

ABC News – the latest news from Australia and worldwide, as well as weekly current affairs programs from ABC’s award-winning team.

ABC Kazam! – the best kids’ fantasy live TV channel offering a high energy mix of action, adventure and animation.

ABC Docs – selection of natural history programs, social documentaries and series.

ABC Arts – culture comes alive with a specially crafted schedule that celebrates the arts in Australia and beyond.

There is also a sixth channel – ABC Shop – which plays previews for programs which can be rented or purchased as high-quality downloads from ABC Shop Downloads.

ABC.net – Australia

List of available TV programs will update regularly, and the amount of content on each of the iView channels will continue to grow throughout the time.

Next on our list of live TV sites in Australia is the SBS television.

And we will finish this list of Australian live TV services with Plus7 and Ten

We hope that you will find a valuable information about your favorite Australian live TV channels and video on demand services. Our list of channels will be updated and moderated.

Cable TV via internet – Canadian Web TV

I must admit that I am a big Ice Hockey fan. In order to find results, game schedules and watch live hockey games on the internet I surfed through Canadian online video portals and services. When I was trying to find the best ways to watch ice hockey games on the web I found a lot of interesting sites with rich and quality program schedules, full sports coverage and much more.

Atlantic, Access, Amazing Discoveries, BC Legislative Assembly, Bell TV Info Channel, CBC, CTV, EWTN Canada, ITC, Knowledge, Legislative Assembly TV Network Northwest Territories, , Legislative Assembly TV Nunavut, Mega Cosmos, MeteoMedia, PPV Info, Rojhelat TV, TouTV, Ten TV, The Shopping Channel, The Weather Network and Tele Quebec are the most popular free live TV channels in Canada.

My No1 choice for watching internet television in Canada and my first stop is National Hockey League – Hockey Night in Canada on CBC sports.

CBC Sports is one of the main segments of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. CBC sports covers all major sports in Canada including NHL, AHL, Horse Racing, Soccer, Basketball, Olympics, Baseball, Football, Alpine Skiing, Figure Skating and off course Curling. The best rated program on the network comes from the CBC Sports presentation of Hockey Night in Canada. CBC Sports also has the rights for Toronto Raptors basketball games and Major League Soccer on CBC (specifically Toronto FC and the playoffs).

CBC network is the English-language online service of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. It started in 1996. Under its previous names, the CBC’s online service first went live in 1993.The Web-based service of the CBC is one of Canada’s largest and most visited web sites. It currently contains over one million pages of information. CBC also runs the French-language website Radio-Canada.ca.

CBC Programs directory is very user friendly and easy to search and navigate. You will search through an alphabetized list of CBC programs. To find a desired program simply click on the appropriate letter in the alphabet line provided. In 2004, CBC began offering RSS feeds, and in 2005, it launched a new online arts and entertainment magazine. In 2006, CBC.ca underwent another redesign after extensive study, with improvements to standards compliance. In March 2008, the website added a comments section to most news items, allowing feedback on stories.

The websites include news from the CBC News website, an extensive sports section, music, science, technology and entertainment pages. CBC/Radio-Canada also offers an extensive, free archives service showcasing pivotal moments in Canadian history from the 1930s on. Over 8,000 online clips and interviews from news and information programs provide an in-depth look at Canada’s past. Kids’ CBC is a preschool commercial-free programming block aired mornings on CBC Television.

TOU.TV is my second choice from Canadian web TV channels. This is a Quebecois French-language video-on-demand website launched on January 26, 2010 by the Société Radio-Canada.

On the site you can find over 2000 hours of French-language television content, near high definition in quality, provided by several TV channels, such as Télévision de Radio-Canada, RDI, ARTV, Télé-Québec, TV5MONDE, TV5 Québec Canada, TFO, Radio Canada International, RTS (Switzerland) and RTBF (Belgium)

My third Canadian online TV recommendation is CTV

Canadian web TV video service list will be moderated and updated.

Watch internet television – Dutch Channels

In order to provide you valid information about Dutch live TV channels and video services available for watching on the internet, our team decides to travel to Amsterdam for a weekend and tries to find out more about Dutch internet television.

We discovered some very interesting and fully functional web TV services but Nederland 24 is our No1 choice. Nederland 24 is live internet TV portal with 12 digital television channels from Netherlands Public Broadcasting. They are available for watching via digital cable, satellite and of course online, in a Silverlight player and in Windows Media Center.

Best 24 – Entertainment archive channel presents highlights of sixty years television history;

Consumenten 24- Shows latest consumer news, offers and information;

Cultura 24 – Arts and culture mix of shows, dance, literature, theater, visual arts, film;

Geschiedenis 24 – Archive/historical channels with in-depth look at the history, but also with a historical look at current events;

101 TV – Youth channel with raw and brutal programs, packed with hilarious clips, exciting live games, experiments and news about festivals and free concert tickets;

Holland Doc 24 – Documentary channel;

Sterren 24 – Live and recorded music, concerts and music videos charts;

Z@ppelin and Familie 24 – Children channel, cartoons family channel at night.

The Nederland 24 package of channels is an extension of the Netherlands Public Broadcasting system where government checked broadcasting companies provide general programming. Based on the amount of active members, broadcasting associations receive air time on three public television networks (Nederland 1, Nederland 2 and Nederland 3) as well as on seven radio stations.

The thematic channels offer these broadcasting associations more air time to expand its core programming. It also gives an opportunity to better target a specific portion of the public audience. These channels broadcast round-the-clock, all day, hence the “24″ part of the name.

NET 5 is another Dutch internet television channel owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media. Other channels of the group in the Netherlands are SBS6 and Veronica.

Free live TV – UK channels

Our team put some serious efforts to find the best UK internet television and video services, available for watching on your PC or laptop, via internet, for free.
Following list of UK TV via internet channels and services will be updated and moderated.

If you want to watch UK live television channels on the internet on your computer, or some kind of video on demand services, you have to know that, for example, BBC TV productions are paid for by the UK television license fee, as well as rights agreements with third parties, mean that all BBC iPlayer TV services are currently only accessible from IP addresses allocated to the UK. A lot of people outside the UK bypass that rule by buying a virtual private network account with an IP address located in the UK.

On the other hand, radio programs can be accessed globally, with the exception of a few programs, mainly sports broadcasts that are affected by rights issues. One quirk is that mobile devices such as the iPod Touch and iPhone cannot access radio overseas via BBC iPlayer whereas computers can.

BBC iPlayer is an internet television and radio service, developed by the BBC. From February 2011, the BBC iPlayer includes links to other programs such as: ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, Channel 4, E4, More 4, Film 4, Channel 5, Fiver, Five USA and S4C. The feature was added to the search function and the channels function. When a user clicks on a program by another broadcaster, there are redirected to that broadcasters catch up service.

An international version of the iPlayer will be launched during 2011 after receiving the approval of the BBC Trust. BBC iPlayer will be available on iPad devices in selected overseas markets in the middle of 2011, starting with the US. BBC will probably charge a monthly subscription fee to access the on-demand application, partially to get audiences “used to the service”, but also to generate additional value from the service in terms of the user data that it gives us.

Sky Player is an online television service from Sky and this service allows users to watch live TV via internet and on demand video content from their PC, Mobile or Xbox 360 via a broadband or Wi-Fi internet connection. Users can access to on demand content such as sports highlights, latest news, movies and TV programs. Bad thing is that content is viewable for a limited amount of time and is protected by digital rights management software provided by Microsoft, and therefore cannot be copied to disc or viewed beyond the date carried by its license. The service is available with no extra fee to existing Sky TV customers, with accessible content depending on the subscriber’s Sky package. Non-Sky TV customers can access the service by subscribing on a pay-per-view basis.

There are currently 32 live TV channels on Sky Player:

Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, G.O.L.D, Sky Living, Sky Livingit, Sky Arts1, Sky Movies Premiere, Sky Movies Family, Sky Movies Showcase, Sky Movies Action and Adventure, MTV, Sky Sports 1-4, Sky sports News, British Eurosport 1 and 2, ESPN, ESPN Classic, Sky News, Nat Geo, Nat Geo Wild, History, Eden, Crime and Investigation, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Nickelodeon, Disney XD, Disney Channels and Nick JR.

Demand 5 is video on demand service offered by Channel 5. The service offered Windows Media Video format downloads of the US imports CSI, House and Grey’s Anatomy. Individual episodes of these series could be ‘rented’ with some episodes available 7 days before they appear on TV.

Demand 5 content is also available on Facebook, SeeSaw, Sony Bravia Internet Video, TV.com, Virgin Media and YouTube.

http://demand.five.tv/

ITV Player is next online video on demand service available in the UK. The service offers a lot of programs and some sports programming is available to watch again via the service and the others such as imports and movies are not currently available due to rights issues, and children’s programming in particular is generally unavailable. Programs are available for 30 days on the site after being first shown on ITV.

http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/

SeeSaw is the next UK Internet television service, owned by Arqiva, and started in the UK on 17 February 2010. SeeSaw also started premium service offering 1,000 hours of premium content. The platform has already agreed a deal with MTV Networks for Comedy Central shows such as South Park and MTV properties such as The Hills, My Super Sweet 16 and Laguna Beach. A range of BBC Worldwide shows are also now be available to rent. SeeSaw made an additional arrangement with NBC Universal Television Distribution to make shows such as House, 30 Rock and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit available on its video on-demand website.

TV via internet – USA channels and video portals

We surfed and searched net in willing to find the best of internet television USA channels for watching from your computer. Watch TV on laptop Moderator Team recommends following online and video portals from the United States of America.

On Hulu, you can watch streaming video of TV shows and movies from NBC, Fox, ABC, and many other networks and studios. Hulu videos are available for watching as internet television only to users in the United States and its overseas territories. In order to ensure that no international users outside the US have access to the program capabilities, Hulu blocks many anonymous proxies, Amazon EC2 IP addresses and virtual private network, because they don’t have international streaming rights for content. Video materials on Hulu are in Flash Video format, including many films and shows that are available in different resolutions. Web syndication services for other websites are also available for watching from your computer. Hulu allows users to embed video materials on their websites. Consumers can also watch Hulu on TV sets by simply connecting a computer with a streaming capable video card to the TV via HDMI or other connection.

Hulu includes programming from several sources, including: Fox Studio: FOX, FX; NBC Universal: NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, Syfy, Oxygen; the Walt Disney Company: ABC, ABC Family; The Biography Channel; MTV Networks: MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, TV Land, Spike; National Geographic Channel.

CNN starts its news website CNN.com on August 30, 1995. This site is now one of the most popular internet television news websites in the world. Users can choose in varieties of blogs, social media coverage and user-generated content. In April 2009, CNN.com ranked third place among online global news sites in unique users in the U.S. according to Nielsen/Net Ratings; with an increase of 11% over the previous year.

On CNN you can watch free live broadcast. CNN International is also broadcast live, as part of the Real Networks Super Pass subscription outside USA. CNN also offers several RSS feeds and podcasts. CNN also has a channel in the popular video-sharing site YouTube, but its videos can only be viewed in the United States, a source of criticism among YouTube users worldwide.

In April 2010, CNN announced via Twitter its upcoming food blog called “Eatocracy,” in which it will “cover all news related to food – from recalls to health issues to culture.”

This is the end of Television as we knew it

Our way for watching TV is changing on day to day basis. More than 70 years, television has been dominated by network broadcasters. Last few years, however, a whole bunch of new market players, such as web players and telecoms operators, have entered the market with ground-breaking platforms and innovative formats that utilize rising new technologies, and are changing our watching experience and viewer consumption behavior. Consequently, both the overall TV value chain and existing revenue models appear increasingly destabilized. In this transition, traditional players as well as new players fight to achieve better position in new established situation. While broadcasting satellite and cable TV operators were busy setting up, internet and TV started to integrate with common services on multiple devices.

This is not some kind of overnight thing or latest technology one season fashion. We can look at this like the result of three major development stages: PC and mobile devices become a means for watching TV – more and more content is either streamed or downloaded onto PCs or mobile devices using a variety of different service platforms, set-top boxes and gaming consoles provide internet-based video access – Set-top box manufacturers such as Roku or Syabas as well as major console manufacturers like Sony and Microsoft include software in their products which allow direct access to the internet and online video platforms, TV-sets include internet connectivity – Major consumer electronics manufacturers, such as Sony and LG, have started to include web applications in their classic TV sets, allowing the web to come to the living room.

end of TV 02

Many years after television started as a simply transitory, the 2009-2010 economic downturn marks the beginning of a decade of restructuring for the TV industry. This new period will begin with an overall decline in the sector’s resources before increasingly varied consumption patterns spur a new period of growth. The decade running from 2010 to 2020 will also be a period that focuses on cost control, with the industrialization of TV production that will depart once and for all from its historical model.

The TV industry is gaining a strong position on the Web, unlike the music and print media industries. As a result, future television will play a central role in video services. This offensive strategy will likely pay off down the line, but does not completely eliminate the possibility of destroying value. There are some structural reasons for this, including a high competitive online advertising market and a lack of control over program circulation and distribution.

Necessary conditions for the future online TV are: consumers are comfortable with online visual consumption; technical solutions that give users access to Internet content on their television sets have been implemented; open Internet access is possible from mobile telephones; premium content is available on the Web; online video quality of service is improving; new players from industries related to the television industry have aligned their strategies.

While this future TV on computer via internet migration will be gradual, it will have a big and deep impact on the industry: the exclusive rights model will no longer be the standard; some consumers will lose interests for traditional managed networks; a globalization trend will be sparked, to the benefit of the major rights holders.

According to iDate’s report, the worldwide television market was, in 2009, primarily affected by the decline in advertising revenue of 9.2%, which could not be compensated for by paid television or public funding; these two sources of revenue increased 7.2% and 3.5% respectively. Up until 2008, advertising was by far the primary means of funding for the industry, generating about 50% of the sector’s revenue, compared to 40% for paid television and 10% for public funding. In 2009, the weight of advertising and subscriptions each accounted for about 45% of the sector’s revenue. By 2010, revenue from paid television should exceed overall advertising revenue worldwide, reaching a ratio of approximately 47%/44% by 2013.

end of TV 01

According to the latest forecasts from Informa Telecoms & Media, over 20 million TV homes globally will be watching 3D TV within five years. Backed by key industry players including set manufacturers, content owners, broadcasters, platforms and satellite operators, 3D TV is expected to be in 1.6% of all homes by 2015. North America will lead the way in terms of number of 3D TV homes with 9.2 million; Western Europe will be the second largest region with 6.8 million and Asia Pacific third with 4.6 million.

Old school linear TV market is still the main player but it is significantly diminishing in importance. The introduction of HD resolution has given traditional linear TV another push but it will be hard to revive long-term viewer interest for personalized TV and on-demand video and all of that can lead to the end of today’s way for watching TV. If so, how will this affect the big key players in the television industry and how should they respond to these changes? Looking at successful players in the new TV ecosystem we believe, that players who want to be present in this new arena need to pay attention to presence on multiple devices and ensure “TV everywhere” as well as a best in class interfaces, identify key content, integrate different formats, bridge content sources and complement linear TV with interactivity, focus on a mix of free and paid services leveraging existing content as well as user/usage data and re-inventing advertising

This summary is based on the report “Future of Television” by Arthur D. Little.

World’s largest direct-broadcast satellite market by the 2012

Indian government decided for open market strategy for cable and satellite television in 1992. Today, 20 years later, India has the most competitive combined cable-satellite direct broadcast market with 7 operators, reaching over 134 million households (out of 223 million) with television sets, of which over 103 million have access to Cable TV or Satellite TV, including 20 million households are direct to home subscribers. In city areas of India, 85% of all households have a TV and over 70% of all households have access to Satellite, Cable or DTH services. Families with TV have been growing at between 8-10%, while growth in Satellite/Cable homes exceeded 15% and DTH subscribers grew 28% over 2009. Real number of households with television access is probably closer to 180 million, since roughly a third of all rural families have some kind of access to television.

India now has more than 500 TV channels covering all the main languages spoken in the nation. India will outreach the USA as the world’s largest direct-broadcast satellite market by 2012.

Hindi television channels are trying to reach outside the country as they see huge benefits in serving the overseas market. For example, Star Plus India is available in 70 countries including North America, the UK, West Asia and Hong Kong. Over the past year, Viacom 18 has entered into the US, the UK and Australia and New Zealand markets, Colors will move into Canada, Singapore, the Caribbean, East Africa and Malaysia, Zee TV reaches 500 million viewers in 167 countries, ZEEL plans to launch more Hindi channels in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and West Asia and made an agreement with market researcher Nielsen Co. to monitor and measure television ratings and trends in the US, primarily for flagship GEC Zee TV, Star India is looking at further expansion in parts of continental Europe such as the Netherlands, France, Italy and Portugal and entered into an agreement with wireless operator Verizon Communications Inc. to distribute its channel on the Fiber Optic Service TV network for North American audiences. Star Plus will join about 40 other international channels that FiOS TV offers access to.

hindi 02

The United States of America have about 1.7 million people of Indian origin, the United Kingdom has about 1.32 million and Canada has more than 300,000. Overseas plans include sub-titling and dubbing local content in foreign languages for people of Indian origin who may have settled overseas four or five generations ago, because Indians abroad are mostly comfortable with the language of the market they reside in, so the content will be re-purposed.

If you look at the scene worldwide, 75% of the world television market operates on syndicated content. While 90% of that syndication market is captured by Hollywood films and dramas, Korean, French, German, Japanese and other Asian content put together barely reach a 10% share. With more Hindi channels venturing overseas, competition will be tougher, because the number of non-resident Indians and persons of Indian origin is significant and they are also among the most affluent communities in several markets.

How can I watch TV on my laptop?

Are you planning to buy a brand new TV set for your house? Please, think again and inform yourself before buying any new pieces of equipment.

On the Web you can find everything, so you can watch live TV with more number of online channels in much cheaper price than your current cable TV service. I preferred to watch TV on my laptop from all around my house and backyard rather than buying a high priced TV set.

If you want to watch TV from laptop, then you will have to install the appropriate software. The software enables you to have greater access to all the favorite TV channels from around the world. Good point is that software programs are available at a very low price. You can pay online with your card or with PayPal and download the full version of the TV for PC software. While you install software on your computer you do not require any cable or USB hardware.

In our experience, problems can start here.

You must be very well informed because there are so many websites that sells some kinds of TV to PC software. Before choosing the software and probably buying it online, it would be a good idea to go through the various blogs, forums and sites that post reviews on this special kind of TV to PC software. After you have been familiar with all relevant information it will be easier for you to decide which software to buy and download.

Problems are leveling up right here.

Standard rate of unsatisfied customers and for almost every web selling product is about 10%. In our case TV to PC software, problems are caused with inappropriate system requirements – outdated hardware for live video streaming and with quality of web connection. Next problem is caused by people. On your quest to inform yourself on review sites or blogs, you can find very small amount of unsatisfied customers who whining and whining around without any evidence, screen shot, video or something, about a new service or software that doesn’t work on their outdated computer. Most of the issues are either consumer related or the people who are selling it, not the service itself. Plus, many services can offer you a trial period. At the end you have 30 – 60 days full money back guarantee. But whining doesn’t stops. And you can guess the rest. Satisfied customers are using new software solutions and watching TV on their computers in peace and silence.

That’s one of the reasons why we start this blog and news site at the first place. When we tried to find relevant information we suffered same problems that I described up here. I hope this clears up some of your confusion and help you in other matters to decide and choose the best product for your money.

If you want to consider more solutions to watch live TV channels on your computer, check out our latest post about live TV on PC/laptop software. With this software solution you can watch more than 3500 TV channels from all around the world.

If you want to watch live stream TV channels on your PC/laptop, you have to reconsider quality and speed of your internet connection.

Web connection speeds are highly exaggerated. 100 bits is not the same as 100 bytes. 8 bits = 1 byte. That’s like the car industry telling you that the car goes over 5,200 feet per minute, and you say “OK, I’ll buy”, but then when you calculate it you realize it only goes a mile a minute or 60 miles per hour maximum. If internet provider tells, you are getting 12 Megabits (12,000,000) bandwidth and when you do the simple math you’ll see that you are only getting 1.5 MB (megabytes). Then you realize you got scammed.

The second scam: DSL (cheaper than cable) doesn’t tell you that just because they are selling you 12Mbits, you’ll be sharing most of that with your neighbors on the same switch. You probably notice that your internet is slow about 9PM, during peak times.

The third scam: Cable sells you 8Mbits at one price and it climbs from there, when they can give you their highest at the same price, because it doesn’t cost them any more to give it to you. Because of their higher prices than DSL for higher quality, you choose a lower speed at the lower price. Cable creates their own slow down during peak times so you will upgrade when you get tired of it.

For end, don’t even think about satellite internet, unless you have a dedicated dish just for web. If you have high winds moving tree branches in the way of the stream or if it rains or snow, your internet connection will be only part functional.

So, if you still want to watch TV on your PC or laptop and you have a wired and/or wireless access inside the home that has not been configured to optimum for your services (internet, video streaming, etc) stop complaining about your own hardware issues or internet access. Just fix it.
